Root rot, Heterobasidion annosum, formerly known as Fomes, looks like mis-shapen pancakes stuck to the log but it can grow into a rather poorly developed bracket. It has a warty, granular spore surface.

The books describe the smell as 'strongly fungusy' and 'emulsion paint'.
