Holm Oak

5 January 2014

Cannon Hall Farm

In this busy part of South & West Yorkshire, it's surprising to find such an untrammelled basin of wooded countryside here between High Hoyland and Cawthorne village (in the sketch above), as seen from the walkway as you make a tour of the farm.

Glossy leaves, the younger ones with jagged edges, give the impression that this is holly but the acorn is a clue that it is an evergreen oak, probably Holm Oak, Quercus ilex, which is native to the Mediterranean.
