Bay, Laurus nobilis

“It is a tree of the Sun, and under the cestial sign Leo, and resisteth witchcraft very potently, as also all the evils old Saturn can do the body of man, and they are not a few : for it is the speech of one, and I am mistaken if it were not Mizaldus, that neither witch nor devil, thunder nor lightning, will hurt a man where a bay tree is.”

Culpeper’s Herbal, 1653

Bay, Laurus nobilis, now in flower. Ours grows in a large terra cotta pot on a sheltered sunny spot on the patio. Barbara adds the leaves to casseroles but now I know about it’s effect on ‘all the evils old Saturn can do the body of man’ I probably ought to take a daily dose!
