horse chestnut and beech AFTER THE FROSTS, the trees have started to turn colour. Maples turn russet. The Horse Chestnuts that the Victorians planted in Wakefield's Thornes Park have turned orchre yellow. But the Beeches standing alongside them on the hilltop are still green.

conkers Leaves spin as they fall. Children, grandparents, even dogs, get involved in the seasonal urge to collect conkers. Fungi emerge amongst the mown grass giving a rural feel to this city park.

hedgehogmagpie A Magpie hops towards a Hedgehog that is out in the open this afternoon in the quiet centre of the park. We go over to check that it is well. It seems to be; it soon pulls its head in as we approach, although doesn't start trotting off as we walk away. I'm glad that this remarkable insectivore still has a home in the city.
