small white mushroom LOOKING DOWN at them they look like white buttons (with just a touch of fawn in the centre) scattered in the grass. Pull one out and it has a delicate stem no bigger than a grass stem. The whole miniature parasol mushroom is the colour of white chocolate.

hollow-stemmed white mushroom Next to it is what looks like the grown-up version, but which I suspect is a separate species. This the same white chocolate colour but is much stouter in build. Its stem is definitely hollow.

Both are growing not far from Horse Chestnut and Beech.

great tits on ash branches All the leaves of Ash are now down. A pair of Great Tits perch on the bare branches. The large black leaf buds are already in place on the twigs. They are arranged in pairs with a larger bud at the end.

In the afternoon sun on the sheltered towpath a bumblebee flies by.
